Thousands take to the roads for Coca-Cola Lisburn Half Marathon
The 2012 Coca-Cola Lisburn Half-Marathon, 10K and Fun Run, which marked the event’s 30th anniversary, attracted over 6,000 runners, many of whom raised thousands of pounds for a variety of worthwhile causes whilst running alongside Ireland's best distance runners.
After a battle that lasted the best part of 13 miles, Dublin athlete Gary O’Hanlon broke away from the pack to win with a time of 1:09:45. In the Ladies race, three time winner and Irish Olympian, Pauline Curley from Tullamore made it a fourth success with a time of 1:20:25.
The winner of the wheelchair race, with a time of 1:07:16, was Paul Hannan and the 10K race was won by former Irish Champion Joe McAllister, with a time of 31:38. The Ladies 10K race was won by Briege Connolly in a time of 36:03 and the wheelchair winner was multiple Half Marathon winner, Jim Corbett.
A highlight of the evening was the Community 3K Fun Run, which attracted thousands of runners, many in various types of fancy dress that added to the feel-good factor of the evening. Timothy McCracken was first across the Fun Run finishing line, with Rebecca Wallace the first female to cross.
Coca-Cola’s Gillian Shields said: “Coca-Cola has been involved in the Half Marathon for a number of years and is proud to be part of an event which is focussed just as much on community spirit and fun as it is on competitive running. This was another hugely successful event for Lisburn City Council with over 6,000 competitors and a growing number of spectators. I would like to extend my congratulations to the organisers, participants and winners and I look forward to seeing you all again next year.”
The Chairman of the Leisure Services Committee, Councillor Thomas Beckett, said: “We enjoyed a great evening and the event attracted thousands of runners and it was gratifying to see so many young people entering the races. Well done to everyone who took part.”
